Employment Situation



“Nonfarm payroll employment rose by 115,000 in April, and the unemployment rate was little changed at 8.1 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Employment increased in professional and business services, retail trade, and health care, but declined in transportation and warehousing.”

Justice Department Investigation in Missoula


“The department has opened a Title IX compliance review and Title IV investigation regarding the University of Montana’s response to sexual assaults and sexual harassment of students.  Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and Title IV of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 each prohibit sex discrimination, including sexual assault and sexual harassment, in education programs.  There have been at least 11 reported sexual assaults involving university students in an 18-month period.  The department will also coordinate with the Department of Education on a related sexual harassment complaint received by that department.”

Pertussis



“Most cases of pertussis are preventable,” said DPHHS Director Anna Whiting Sorrell. “All parents and caregivers of children need to make sure their children are up to date on this and other vaccines. Anyone who cares for children should also be up to date on their vaccinations to prevent spreading pertussis.”

Panetta: U.S. Remains Focused on Pursuit of al-Qaida
““I don’t think there’s any question that America is safer as a result of the bin Laden operation,” Panetta told reporters traveling with him.“When you combine that with the other operations that have … gone after al-Qaida leadership,” he added, “I think it has weakened al-Qaida as an organization and certainly it has prevented them from having the command-and-control capability to be able to put together an attack similar to 9/11.”
