“The U.S. Department of Justice and the City of Missoula announced
an agreement on Wednesday, May 15, that ends the year-long investigation of the
Missoula Police Department’s handling of sexual assault cases.
Mayor John Engen and Police Chief Mark Muir participated in a
telephone news conference with representatives of the U.S. Department of
Justice, in which they agreed to implement and revise policies to ensure that
sexual assault cases are handled fairly and effectively. Deputy Assistant
Attorney General Roy L. Austin Jr. praised Mayor Engen and Chief Muir for their
cooperation and leadership in a genuine effort to ensure that Missoula is a model
community in protecting women’s safety and rights. “
